Communities of Practice June 5-8 Workshop Series

June 5 @ 9:00 am - June 8 @ 1:00 pm

June 5th – 8th from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM at The Kalamazoo Promise  

We further dive into CoP with a series of workshops that include best practices and strategies. The last hour will be a lunch-in quality session. This event is hybrid. 

Sessions are as follows: 

June 5th 

  • What comes first: Chicken or the egg? Identity, Belonging, Agency.
  • We will be exploring “This Book is Anti-Racist” by Tiffany Jewell, and our Identity, Belonging, and Agency framework.
  • The Community Resiliency Model 
    • In this session you will learn a set of six wellness skills/strategies that individuals can use when facing a stressful and/or traumatic event. Learn how to use it in your everyday time with youth and adults.

June 6th  

Youth-Driven Spaces 

  • In this 2-part session you will learn how to co-create and co-facilitate with youth using planning, reflection, and choice strategies. How do we provide a space in which we can be adult partners in our youth spaces and share that power with them? If you will be designing and leading activities throughout the summer then this session is for you.

June 7th 

  • STEAM, Literacy, and Family Engagement 
    • In this session you will learn how to integrate STEAM, Literacy, and Family engagement into your program. 
  • Project Based Learning 
    • In this session you will learn a teaching method in which youth learn by actively engaging in real-world problems and personally meaningful projects.

June 8th 

  • Creating effective and efficient liberatory learning environments 
  • As youth development advocates, how do we create these effective and efficient liberatory learning environments? Walk away with an understanding of high-quality strategies to use during warm welcomes and session flow in your program. As well as how to carry out purposeful interactions with youth. 
  • Lesson Planning 
  • Let’s plan for success this summer! This action-packed session will help youth development advocates to ensure that all of the components of quality are included within their lesson plans. Cover all of your bases from the bottom to the top of the pyramid in this hands-on session! Bring your own lesson plans to use during this session.
